How to Convert Any Video to MP4 with Format Factory
MP4 is the single most common conversion target in the app — here's every source format that converts into it, and where MP4 converts back out to, in one page.
MOV / MKV / AVI / WMV / FLV to MP4
The most common conversion path: any of these container formats convert to MP4 through the same “→MP4” button in the Video panel. MP4's wide device and platform support is the usual reason people convert into it — it plays natively on far more phones, TVs, and web players than MKV or WMV do.
DVD / VOB / ISO to MP4
Ripping a DVD to a playable video file uses the separate, free DVDRipper module — it's not in the base install and downloads (24 MB) the first time you use it, through Options → Modules. Once installed, DVD/VOB sources convert to MP4 the same way any other video source does.
HEVC to MP4
HEVC (H.265) sources — common from newer phone cameras — convert to standard H.264 MP4 for compatibility with older players, or you can keep HEVC encoding inside an MP4 container if your hardware supports it. Run HA Test first to confirm your GPU accelerates HEVC encoding before converting a large batch.
MP4 to AVI / MKV / MOV / 3GP / MPEG
Going the other direction works the same way — add an MP4 source, then pick AVI, MKV, MOV, 3GP, or MPEG as the target instead. This is the typical path for older devices or specific editing software that needs a particular container format.

Step-by-step conversion guide
Open Format Factory and select the Video panel on the left, then click the "→MP4" button.
Click "Add File" and select your source video — MOV, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, HEVC, and DVD/VOB/ISO sources all work the same way.
Optionally open "Configurar Destino" to adjust the encoder, bitrate, resolution, or rotate/crop before converting.
Choose your output folder (default C:\FFOutput) and click Start.

Why won't a video file play after I convert it to MP4?
This is almost always a codec mismatch with whatever's trying to play it — some older media players don't support every codec MP4 can contain (H.265/HEVC inside an MP4 container, for example, isn't universally supported the way H.264 is). Re-converting with the encoder explicitly set to H.264 in the output settings resolves the large majority of "won't play" cases.
What's the best bitrate for MP4 video?
It depends on resolution and purpose — a 1080p video intended for sharing usually looks fine between 4–8 Mbps, while 4K footage needs meaningfully more to avoid visible compression artifacts. When file size matters more than exact bitrate control, using the Size Limit field in output settings and letting Format Factory calculate the bitrate for you is simpler than guessing.
Can I convert an MP4 without losing audio sync?
Standard conversions preserve audio/video sync correctly in our testing. If you do notice drift after converting, it's more often inherited from a problem already present in the source file than introduced by the conversion itself — check the original file in another player before assuming the conversion caused it.
MP4 the container vs. the codec inside it
A source of real confusion worth clearing up: MP4 is a container format, not a codec — it can hold video encoded with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or even the newer VVC/H.266 the current build supports. Two MP4 files can behave very differently depending on which codec is actually inside, which is why a file that plays everywhere might sit next to another MP4 that only plays on newer devices. When compatibility is the goal, explicitly choosing H.264 as the encoder in output settings — rather than assuming "MP4" alone guarantees playback — is the safer choice.
Preparing MP4 for social media upload
Most social platforms accept MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio as their safest common denominator, which is exactly the combination Format Factory's default MP4 output uses. If a platform rejects an upload specifically, the more likely culprit is an unusual aspect ratio, an oversized resolution, or a file exceeding the platform's own size cap — checking the target platform's specific limits and adjusting the Size Limit and resolution fields in output settings accordingly resolves most upload rejections.
