Shrinking a video file
Open a file's output settings (“Configurar Destino”) and the Video tab exposes a Size Limit field alongside the encoder, bitrate, and CRF/CQ controls — set a target file size or lower the bitrate directly to shrink a video before emailing it or uploading it somewhere with a size cap. The same dialog includes two-pass encoding for a better quality-to-size ratio when file size matters more than conversion speed.
HEVC, DivX, and other codec-specific conversions
The encoding engine has been updated with each major release — the current build uses FFmpeg 7.1, which added VVC (H.266) encoding for MP4/MKV and HEVC/VP9/AV1 support for FLV. Which codecs are hardware- accelerated on your specific machine depends on your CPU and GPU; run the built-in HA Test tool (Options → Advanced) before a large batch job to confirm what your hardware actually supports rather than assuming.

Why you'd convert a video format at all
Video format conversion usually comes down to one of three real needs: compatibility (your phone, TV, or editing software won't play the source container), size (the source file is too large for email, upload, or storage limits), or workflow (a specific app or platform requires a particular codec or resolution). Does converting a video lose quality?
Converting between two lossy formats (like MOV to MP4) involves re-encoding, which can introduce a small quality loss depending on your bitrate and codec settings — using a bitrate close to or higher than the source, and enabling two-pass encoding in the output settings, minimizes this. Simply changing the container without re-encoding the streams (where supported) avoids the loss entirely.
Can I convert multiple video files at once?
Yes — add multiple source files to the Video panel before clicking Start, and each converts according to the same target format and settings, one after another in the queue.
Which video format should I convert to by default?
MP4 with H.264 encoding is the safest general-purpose choice — it plays on the widest range of devices, browsers, and platforms of any format the app supports. Reach for something more specific (MKV for multiple subtitle tracks, WebM for web embedding) only when you have a concrete reason to.
Container format vs. video codec
One distinction worth understanding before converting: the file extension (MP4, MKV, AVI) describes the container — essentially a box holding video, audio, and subtitle streams — while the codec (H.264, HEVC, VP9) describes how the video data inside is actually compressed. Two files with the same extension can use completely different codecs, which is often the real reason a file "won't play" even though the extension looks familiar. Format Factory's output settings let you control both independently: pick your container via the format button, then fine-tune the codec in the destination configuration dialog.
Setting up a repeatable conversion workflow
If you convert video regularly in the same way — say, every phone clip down to a specific bitrate before archiving — it's worth configuring your output settings once and reusing that same target format and quality profile each time rather than reconfiguring from scratch.
